Coaching

All professional club academies will have permanent and casual coaching staff, ranging from u5 to u23 age groups. Specialist roles include Head of Coaching, Phase Lead, Age Group Specific, Goalkeeping, Futsal and Skills Coaches. Community departments will employ a large level of coaches, mostly casual, with a lower qualification requirement than for academy. There is also a large market for coaches in private coaching academies, and schools, and grass root participation through national and county associations. UEFA qualifications, and FA Youth Modules, are key minimum requirements for professional academies.

Phisiotherapy/Medical

Clubs and private organisations will employ several specialist medical staff, both permanent and casual. Roles include Lead Physiotherapists, Age Group Physiotherapists, Therapists, Head of Medicine, and Doctors. A degree or relevant qualification in related area, and generally chartered membership, are key minimum requirements.

Sports Science

Not only will a club employ a Head of Sports Science for the club and academy, but most clubs will also have, for the 1st team and academy, a Lead Sport Scientist and/or Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach. Other roles are Nutritionist and Psychologist. A degree in sports science or related area is a key minimum requirement. Coaching qualifications can be advantageous.

Analyst

Performance analysts are used in a variety of roles, in clubs and national associations. These include 1st Team Opposition Analyst, Academy Lead Performance Analyst, Academy Performance Analyst and Scouting and Recruitment Analyst. A degree in performance analysis, or sports science, is a key minimum requirement. Coaching qualifications can be advantageous.

Scouting

Roles in scouting and player recruitment are very varied and range from permanent, to contract to casual. They include 1st Team Scouting and Academy Scouting, with Head of Academy Scouting/Recruitment leading a team of specialist scouts across all age groups from u5 to u23, scouting in grass roots football, non-league football, and professional football. Coaching qualifications can be minimum requirements. There are FA Talent ID qualifications courses, which are becoming minimum requirements.

Administration

This is a large area for national and county associations and governing bodies, running the game, as well as within clubs, academies, and private companies in the football industry. Roles covered are Club Secretary, Academy Secretary, Coordinators, PA’s, Receptionists, Governance Officers, and Development Officers. A degree or relevant diploma can be a key minimum requirement.

Operations

Operations is a growing and specialist area within football clubs, academies, and governing bodies. Roles include Head of Club Operations, Head of Academy Operations, Operations Officers, Match Day Operations, and Coordinators. A degree is a key minimum requirement.

Education/Safeguarding

Professional and private academies must educate their players, for example with BTEC and NVQ qualifications. There are also links between academies and primary/secondary schools. They will employ a Head of Education, Tutor, and Teacher roles; permanent, contract and casual. An education degree, sometimes PGCE, is a key minimum requirement. Professional academies will also have Head of Welfare or Safeguarding Officer permanent roles.

Community

All professional clubs will have a community department, and it is probably the most ranging of job categories for different employment opportunities. Community covers Development Officers and Managers, Coaches, Administrators, and other roles in areas such as schools, grass roots clubs, social inclusion, disability, girls’ participation, and multi-sport. There are many roles in all types of employment; permanent, contract and casual. Generally, clubs’ community departments are set up as charitable trusts, still linked to the football club and academy.

Marketing/Media

The roles in this category include Head of Marketing/Media/Communications and Officer titles. All professional clubs will have a marketing and/or media or communications department, as well as national associations and governing bodies. Other private organisations working in football will specialise in media and marketing. A relevant degree is a key minimum requirement.

Finance

Professional clubs, private academies, national associations and all organisations in and around the game, will all employ finance specialists. Roles include Head of Finance, Accountant, Finance Administrator, Finance Assistant, and Payroll Officer. A degree or relevant diploma, and chartered membership, can be a key minimum requirement.

Other

Other areas of job categories offering direct employment within the football industry are in facilities, hospitality, commercial sales, stewards, catering, transport, and grounds keeping.
